Meissl: Updating Established Structures

There is a great deal of know-how, technology, and experience in umbrellas—especially those built by Meissl. With the support of funding, the company has also made significant progress in the digitalization process.

The large umbrellas from Meissl have a diameter of up to 17 meters and are exposed to extreme wind speeds, as well as UV radiation, temperature fluctuations, and rain. The company has been working for nearly 50 years to continuously develop these umbrellas and offer complete concepts, such as umbrella bars. This effort has made the company a world market leader.

Many of the innovation projects in recent years have been supported by our experts, who identified the appropriate funding strategies for Meissl. Currently, the company is working on digitalizing its processes and providing faster service to customers. “I would say we’ve managed the first wave very well, with all the hiccups that come with it,” says Managing Director Hermine Meissl. This included, for example, analyzing existing potentials and introducing a new ERP system.

Digital Service On-Site

In the sales department, a pilot project is already being successfully carried out, where a team is equipped with iPads. With these, they can create scans and sketches on-site that are immediately processed digitally. “It’s really brilliant,” emphasizes Meissl. “We have less internal stress during the offer phase because many steps can be done directly on-site, and customers can—at least for many projects—get an immediate idea of the finished umbrellas as well as a price quote.” The tablet is just as good as the large and unwieldy scanner previously used. In challenging terrain, such as servicing a mountain site, this is a double advantage.

Continuous Development of Software and Knowledge

Until the project is completed next year, further adjustments to the ERP system are planned, involving employees, producing training videos, and using a drone for technical recordings. The digitalization aims not only to make internal processes more efficient but also to improve the product range and customer communication. Currently, product portfolios are being streamlined, and internal databases are being optimized to ensure better oversight and management. “A real transformation process is underway,” Meissl summarizes.

Support Through Funding

Funding supports such large processes. In the case of Meissl, the Salzburg.Digital state funding was utilized, which can consist of several phases—from consultation to strategy and implementation. “For us, Digi.Invest was invaluable in such a large project,” says Meissl.
