Onboarding New Employees – Tips for Getting Started

Onboarding new international employees is a critical phase for long-term success and satisfaction within the company. Read here how it can work even better.

Onboarding new employees is a critical phase that significantly contributes to long-term success and satisfaction within a company. When these new hires come from abroad, the process becomes even more exciting.

An ideal way to enhance this initial period of mutual acclimatization is through a Welcome Journey, which can encompass various elements—from a welcome package containing useful information about the company, the workplace, and life in the area, to dedicated contacts who assist newcomers outside of work.

Especially helpful: a buddy system

A so-called buddy system can assist new employees in easing their transition. Experienced and local colleagues take on the role of buddies, available to answer questions, provide insights into company processes, and help with orientation beyond daily job tasks. This not only promotes knowledge sharing but also fosters social cohesion within the team, creating a sense of belonging that significantly accelerates the onboarding process.

Support for family relocation is also crucial for international hires—assistance with finding housing, information about childcare, and guidance during bureaucratic processes. Such services not only demonstrate appreciation but can also substantially reduce stress.

Structure and Routine

Establishing a clear routine and structured meetings is vital during the initial period in a new company. Regular check-ins, meetings with team leaders, and shared meals create a solid framework and can serve as a guide through the new daily environment. Scheduled appointments also help maintain an overview of ongoing projects and keep individual tasks in focus, while encouraging regular team communication.

Equality – More Than Just a Slogan

Companies should place great emphasis on equality—not only between male and female employees but also between local and international staff. This fosters an inclusive and appreciative corporate culture that benefits everyone. However, additional attention may be required in certain cases, particularly regarding cultural differences or language barriers, which can only be overcome collaboratively. Tailored support in these areas is ideal, preferably in partnership with a buddy.

Cultural differences should be viewed as opportunities rather than challenges. Intercultural training for all employees can serve as a valuable tool to promote mutual understanding. Team events and targeted team-building activities provide playful, hands-on ways to develop intercultural competencies that are essential in our globalized world, both inside and outside the workplace.

7 tips for intercultural work

Culture influences our working life: a colleague’s aversion to new tools and ways of working, a colleague’s sympathy for clear structures and rules, or a colleague’s relaxed approach to deadlines – this can result in conflicts! But this is not inevitable! Intercultural competencies promote understanding for each other and strengthen cooperation.
