Mr. Eddy: How interesting is Salzburg for Netflix?

In the name of our film location Salzburg, we had the opportunity to host a delegation from Netflix. During a stroll through the city center and Hellbrunn, the team could get an impression of Salzburg’s film scenery. Steve Eddy, Director of the DACH Region for Netflix, answered a few questions for us on that occasion.

How does decision-making work at Netflix? What criteria are used to select productions, and how does Netflix decide on production countries?

Our goal at Netflix is quite clear: “Entertain the world.” We aim to entertain our members to the best of our ability, which includes offering series, films, documentaries, and shows that best match their tastes, current moods, and the zeitgeist. For our German-language content, our priority is the audience in Austria, Switzerland, and Germany. If we manage to engage our local audience, we have achieved our goal. Following this principle, we select our productions. Specifically, in the process, our creative team meets with local producers and writers; pitches or entire scripts are reviewed. Ultimately, we assess whether the idea aligns with Netflix and contributes to the promise we make to our members. If the fit is there, the production team comes into play. They assist our local production partners in defining which production locations align with the creative vision of the project and whether they have the right infrastructure and crew to bring the project to life.

How does Austria fare in these considerations?

We always aim for “best-in-class.” Austria brings many essential prerequisites to execute such high-quality productions. The increasing number of local crews and suppliers, diverse and impressive locations, and very industry-friendly conditions have made Austria a truly attractive location for producing films, series, or shows in recent years.

What are examples of productions that have already been filmed in Austria?

We are pleased that several initial productions have been filmed in Austria. Current examples include “Exterritorial”, a film that will be available on Netflix later in the year, and our recently launched series “CROOKS.”

What is your perception of Salzburg, what do you associate with it?

Austria is a beautiful country with diverse landscapes. Salzburg itself has a very unique and intriguing character. As someone who grew up with a love for movies, I naturally think of the classic “The Sound of Music” when I think of Salzburg. But after being here in person, it’s clear that Salzburg and its region offer so much more and present a range of possibilities.

What kind of production can you envision spontaneously here?

I believe what excites me most after this tour is seeing the variety of shows that could be filmed in Salzburg. Aside from the obvious beauty of the landscape, the city has a very interesting profile—both in terms of appearance and atmosphere—that could be suitable for some of our projects.

Are there specific plans for Salzburg as a filming location?

There are no specific plans that we can discuss at the moment. However, for some of our productions—such as a planned feature film—we are actively exploring Austria and specifically this region with our production partners.
